How to Light a Miller Gas Furnace

Miller gas furnaces, manufactured by Nordyne, are commonly used in manufactured homes, garages, cabins, and other compact spaces where a regular furnace might not fit. As the weather gets colder, you’ll need to ensure your Miller gas furnace lights properly to keep your space warm. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you through the process, including important safety steps to follow.

Safety First

Before you start, it’s essential to have your gas supply company’s phone number readily available. In case you detect a gas leak at any point, you’ll need to contact them immediately for assistance.

Step-by-Step Lighting Instructions

  1. Check for Gas Leaks
    • Smell along the floor around the bottom of the furnace for gas. If you detect any gas smell, do not attempt to light the furnace. Leave the area immediately and call your gas supplier. Only proceed if you do not smell gas.
  2. Prepare the Furnace
    • Set your thermostat to the lowest setting.
    • Turn off the electric power to your furnace. This can be done either at the disconnect switch located between the furnace and the breaker panel or directly at the breaker panel by switching off the furnace breaker.
  3. Access the Gas Control Lever
    • Rotate the latch on the front of the furnace door and open it to access the gas control lever.
    • Push the lever to the left until it reaches the “Off” position.
  4. Clear Any Residual Gas
    • Wait at least 10 minutes to allow any residual gas to dissipate. If you still smell gas after this period, clear the area and contact your gas supplier. If there is no gas smell, proceed to the next step.
  5. Locate the Pilot Tube
    • Find the pilot tube attached to the gas control valve. Follow this tube down to the fire observation door. You’ll need to look inside this door to see the end of the pilot as you light the furnace.
  6. Set the Gas Control Lever
    • Push down on the gas control lever and move it to the “On” position, then release it.
    • Move the lever to the “Pilot” position. Continue to move the lever to the “Set” position and hold it there. The lever will not stay in this position on its own, so you must hold it manually.
  7. Ignite the Pilot
    • Press down on the spark igniter button located next to the fire observation door. Keep pressing this button until you see a flame at the end of the pilot tube.
  8. Stabilize the Flame
    • Once the flame appears, hold the gas control lever in the “Set” position for at least one minute. After this time, release the lever so it can automatically move back to the “Pilot” position.
  9. Activate the Furnace
    • Move the gas control lever to the “On” position.
    • Restore the electricity to the furnace by turning on the power at the breaker or disconnecting the switch.
    • Set your thermostat to your desired temperature and turn the fan switch to the “On” position.
    • Close the furnace door securely.

Final Checks and Troubleshooting

After completing these steps, your Miller gas furnace should be up and running, providing the warmth you need. If the furnace still fails to produce warm air, it might be time to contact your local dealer for more advanced troubleshooting and support. Remember, attempting complex repairs on your own can lead to accidental damage and may void your warranty, so professional assistance is recommended for persistent issues.

By following these steps, you can ensure your Miller gas furnace lights properly and operates efficiently throughout the cold months. Always prioritize safety, and don’t hesitate to seek professional help when needed.
